Windup Taxi Linocut
Color Reduction Process:
This linocut print was created from 3 blocks of 9×12 inch linoleum with 16 separate pressings for the individual color layers. (Only 9 stages are shown here.) I hand-carved the linoleum for each color layer, except for layer 15, where I drilled holes using a small pen-shaped electric drill to create the tablecloth texture. I used a modified cold press laminator printing press to press each inked layer onto paper. This is a limited edition of 17 prints. No more prints can be made, as each previously carved layer is destroyed by carving for the next layer on the same block.
I love gradients, and this project involved blending inks with a rubber roller to achieve the desired effect.
I used Caligo Safe Wash oil-based relief printing ink, mixing the basic “process” colors to make the colors I desired. Paper is Legion Stonehenge Cotton Fiber 90 lb. printmaking paper. Battleship gray art linoleum.
